edelweiss pc _01

Technology may have least to do with art, but Edelweiss PC by Million-Dollar-PC is a technically artistic PC casemod that other than presenting functional value also offers a unique design, which is quite different from regular custom made cases that we came across in the past. The Edelweiss PC has got all the wires and cables tucked up neatly within the confines of smoked glass case, so there’s no clutter around the machine, while on the other hand, the other components and the cooling system is left outside for us to see. Check out more images after the jump.

After Native Project, a new very awaited product: play DJ Hero conceived by the Activision company. It is about a new derivative of famous Guitar Hero with this time, an accessory in the platinum shape which will be available on the consoles Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

Mobile Phone Matryoshka Dolls: Kyle Bean via CR
While not exactly to scale, I love this expression of the evolution of cellphones via Russian Matryoshka dolls. It's a concept toy by designer Kyle Bean.

Even though we're all still digesting the Palm Pre--Apple's WWDC event is sure to bring news of the next iPhone iteration in just about an hour. We'll keep you posted.

Cellphone Russian Dolls: Kyle Bean

If you've ever watched a hard drive die a slow death, you'll know computer memory isn't forever. So if you'd like to upload your consciousness and live forever, that's a major challenge. Luckily, science has a solution: billion-year nano-data storage.

Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California Berkeley have developed a nanotube technology that can store a bit for 1 billion years — and it has the theoretical capacity to store 1 trillion bits per square inch. Scientists say the technology to create the nanotubes is well within current methods for manufacturing semiconductors.

The only problem with such small and sensitive technology is that, by reading it, you might automatically degrade it. Calculations show that the binary values within the nanotube would change in about a billion years — which is, after all, much longer than human existence to date. And even in a normal human life, people change. So, go for it!

Activision DJ HERO
Activision DJ HERO

Not to be outdone by its rival, Activision officially announced its newest music-oriented gaming title, DJ HERO. An offshoot from its immensely successful GUITAR HERO franchise, which gross $2 billion dollars in sales worldwide, DJ HERO let you “be the life of the party”, and allow you to spin away popular dance tunes and hip-hop tracks.

The game will include a customized turntable controller with the familiar 4 color-coded buttons. Available in versions for the 4 major gaming consoles: Xbox 360, PS2, PlayStation 3, and Wii, DJ HERO will due out towards the end of October this year, with selected retailers (like Amazon) taking pre-release orders now.

In addition, just prior to the E3 gaming tradeshow this week, Activision briefly introduced a special edition of DJ HERO, currently in the works, with EMINEM and Jay-Z. It will include new greatest hits CDs, controller with advance functions, a DJ stand and a metal carring case. One other possibility is the special edition may include previously unreleased tracks. Details yet to come…

WORLD'S SMALLEST HUMANOID ROBOT

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

http://web-japan.org/trends/science/images/l_scib070831.jpg

A new humanoid robot, certified as the world's smallest, will be released this autumn by Japanese toy manufacturer Tomy Company. On October 25, 2007, the Omnibot 17ยต i-SOBOT is scheduled to hit the market—as well as the 2008 edition of Guinness World Records, which will list the product as "the smallest humanoid robot in production." Robotics fans look forward to i-SOBOT as a fun toy to add to their collections, but also as a leap forward in miniaturization of the advanced parts that go into these high-tech tools.

Surprising Size and Price
i-SOBOT stands just 16.5 centimeters tall, and weighs only around 350 grams. While the robot fits in the palm of your hand, it remains a fully outfitted bipedal machine, with 17 moving joints. Used throughout the body are tiny, custom servomotors developed by Tomy. The robot's onboard gyro-sensor allows it to maintain its balance automatically as it goes smoothly through its programmed motions. i-SOBOT comes with an infrared remote-control unit, but users can also use voice commands to control it.

Tomy's i-SOBOT architecture, the control system developed to operate this new robot, makes use of 19 integrated circuit chips that work in tandem to enable the toy's complex actions.

Solar-Powered Handset

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Manufactured for KDDI (au) by Sharp, this outdoorsy phone should show up in Japan by June. Unlike the unrealistic claims made by other solar phone dabblers like Samsung, KDDI's ambitions here are modest, but practical.

KDDI has taken a pragmatic approach to the solar phone, integrating a waterproof panel onto what sounds like a very low-draw device. They claim that 10 minutes of sun absorption should grant two hours of standby, or a minute or so of talk time—an extreme ratio that suggests that battery life—not a huge feature list—is the main priority here.

The solar panel alone is enough to charge the battery to a respectable 80%, but KDDI doesn't mention how long that might take. Price and global availability are TBD.

What is Project Natal? Is it a fancy motion controller? Is it an easy way to talk to your TV? Is it a new way to use the 360 or Live? No, to Microsoft, it's much more. It's the goal.

Talking to Marc Whitten, Microsoft's Xbox Live General Manager, he's happy to show you last.fm, Sky, Facebook or Twitter, the latest services to be announced for Xbox Live. But these are just updates, part of Live's slow evolution to...something bigger. And you can see that in Whitten's body language when he hears "Natal." He goes from somewhat stiff and professionally cordial to shifting restlessly in his seat with sparkling eyes, like a kid who just wants to get back to his favorite toy.

As it happens, Natal is precisely what Microsoft's Xbox 360 Live team is and has been working toward since at least the development of NXE (though surely earlier, especially from a pure hardware perspective). And according to Whitten, it's the last step of Live.

You can have an amazing Live experience without Natal and you can have an amazing Natal experience without Live. But the magic, the endgame, the place that we're going in this social world in the living room is [Natal and Live] tied together. We spend a ton of time on how we're going to reimagine the future with this idea of controlerless gaming and Live together.

To be fair, "endgame" was my word originally, but Whitten, a man ever so careful with his diction, couldn't help but to use it. He sees entertainment and communication converging on Live, and he sees Natal as the way to assemble it all in your living room.

Indeed, if Natal works as well as advertised it's hard to see the technology, the idea, as anything less. You know, at least until we get the holodeck.

Nokia N97 Smartphone Shipment Begins Today

Only on its 2nd day and already June is proving to be a busy month as merchandisers vying for spots to mark their product launch. One such is the anticipated N97 Smartphone from Nokia, which begins to roll out of its factories worldwide today. First unveiled during the last December’s Nokia World 2008, the N97 device, as Nokia puts it, is not so much a “smartphone” but more of a “mobile computer”.

Working in conjunction with the newly opened application store from Nokia, Ovi, the N97 boasts a slew of functions, not unlike those found on the iPhone App Store. Designed by Eguchi Shunjiro, its physical properties are impressive as well, including a QWERTY key pad that doesn’t slide out but pivot upward via a “swing brace”. This immediate provide an ideal viewing angle of the 3.5 LCD screen for user while they type.

Though it most likely won’t be able to dethrone the current king of mobile device – Apple iPhone . The new Nokia N97 will certain make the field a bit more crowded, which entails more selection for the consumers at large.

The first round comes courtesy of Frank Kozik and Jeremy “MAD” Madl. They also have some blanks in case you’re feeling a bit artistic. Check ‘em out… more pix after the jump.

The KDDI AU Design Project bunch over in Japan have stumped up with this latest concept phone for music cellphones of the future. And it blends two things we like a Giz: funky cellphone tech and Transformers. In fact Box To Play is less "robot in disguise," and more "hi-fi in disguise" because when it's a phone, it's a normal phone—keypad, camera and such—but when it transforms it's its own speaker system with a graphical visualizer around its faces. Neat, and exactly the sort of innovative design I'd like to see in future phones. Check out the movie of the concept in action at the KDDI link. [KDDI AU]
